ISCS & The Achuar

Our school is working towards building a strong, family-like connection with the Achuar community in Ecuador/Peru, by exchanging resources, sending students for visits, and providing educational material for the community. We have established a barter system where we send books and learning tools to the Achuar school in exchange for handmade artifacts, such as pots and jewelry. One of the teachers in our school—Mr Turner—has visited the Achuar community himself. Check out his adventures in the Ecuadorian Amazon!

Trade vs. Charity

We believe that the concept of charity can sometimes ineffective and unsustainable in the long run. It can cause a dependency on donations which is often unhealthy and sometimes harmful for the recipient. Instead, by using a barter trade system, where we exchange goods for goods, we form a much more effective and meaningful relationship with the Achuar community, as it gives the Achuar a chance to be directly involved in the improvement of their own education. This method is sustainable, healthy, and mutually beneficial for both ends of the relationship.
