Academic education in the Achuar community is minimal. The school building is provided by the government, and classes follow the Ecuadorian curriculum. Volunteer teachers in the area are working on teaching children English, so that they are able to communicate with tourists, and Spanish, in order to be able to get work or further education in the cities of Ecuador. The school does not offer a baccalaureate degree, and teaches students only up to a level of 10th grade. It is also important for the people of the community to learn Spanish in order to be able to contact the Ecuadorian government over issues such as land ownership and access medicine.
